All gardening supplies must be maintained but keeping a clean worm bin is not the solution here. The worm bin has to be kept busy of activities inside every day in order for the worms to stay alive and multiply. Keeping as many worms as they can is the secret to maintaining a good worm bin. Another very important care and maintenance tip is to keep or placing the worm bin under temperatures of about 50 to 80 degrees F at all times. Higher temperature will discourage decomposing of the food scraps and may be drying out and also it may be too hot for the worms to survive. On the other hand, during winter or extreme cold conditions, any dead matter may not decompose under extreme cold condition so the worms will not have anything to digest if the vegetable scraps are not decomposing. They will also not survive under such temperatures. Lift the beddings below the scraps and worms at least once or twice a week to allow fresh air in the container and also if possible, add a new layer of fresh scraps and another layer of fresh bedding material. This allows faster decomposition of the new scraps and ease digestion for the worms. planters
It is advisable that the gardener should not apply too much of the scraps into the container at a go because that will take time to decompose and instead attract fleas, rot and smell awfully. Ready compost should be removed and kept in plastic containers and the whole exercise continues.
